I have always been a keen reader and definitely would say books are one of my main self-care strategies. From childhood I have loved the escape and adventure of stories. After a bad day at school (of which there were many!) I could come home, curl up and go into the world of whatever book I was reading at the time. I don’t always read for solace and distraction though, I also find books bring about joy, wonder, curiosity, and connection with the wider world.

I hate not having a book on the go and have loved the reading suggestions and friendships that have come about through joining a book club in the village where I live. Being part of a book club has led me to some fantastic books that I would never have chosen myself and best of all allowed me to chat about them with other people.

This September will see the launch of Wrexham Glyndwr University’s very own Student Book Club ‘Shelf Care’ that will be a friendly, inclusive and supportive group for all students at the University. The plan is to have a monthly book and informal get together (most probably with coffee/cake!) to discuss it. The library will hold a small number of copies of each book in their brand new ‘Shelf Care’ section and all books will be available in second-hand paperback or low-cost kindle copy.

So, if you love to read, used to love to read, or perhaps would like to try reading this is most definitely the group for you! Hopefully ‘Shelf Care’ can also provide a lovely opportunity to meet other students from across the University with a shared love of reading.

Watch for us during Welcome Week, and our first meeting will be 1pm-2pm, Wednesday 28th September 2022, when we’ll be introducing the books for the year. We hope to see you there!
