You might’ve seen the terms period dignity or period poverty used before, whether in Wrexham or across the UK. The term refers to campaigns aiming to reduce barriers caused by menstruation through providing free period products to those who need them.
Period Dignity means having free, easy access to menstrual products whenever you need them. At Wrexham SU, we launched our campaign in 2018 (originally named Period Poverty) and have been working to reduce the stress associated with menstruation for our students ever since.
In recent years, the campaign has expanded to include more eco-friendly options thanks to our partnership with UK-based organisation TOTM. Their products include organic and reusable items, reflecting your SU’s commitment to both accessibility and sustainability.
Our award-winning campaign began as a student-led initiative to tackle period poverty on campus. Since then, it’s grown into one of our longest-running wellbeing projects.
Thousands of products have been distributed over the years, with the campaign continuing to evolve in response to student needs, especially during the cost-of-living crisis.
You’ll find Period Dignity stations in the SU toilets and at all of our satellite campuses including Regent Street, Northop and St. Asaph. Reusable products are also available on request.
Additional period products are sometimes made available through other SU initiatives such as Help Yourshelf, alongside key events throughout the year such as Wellbeing Week and Go Green Week.
The main point of access for products is in bathrooms to keep things discreet and easy for those who need them, so that you’ve always got a back-up in any unexpected menstruation situations!
We’re always keen to find ways we can keep improving! Contact carrie.bennett@wrexham.ac.uk for all things Period Dignity.
