So, what are the Student Union Elections?

This is an election held and hosted by the Students’ Union, for our Student Council, and our President and Vice President. The elections are held over a month and split into two periods; self-nominations, and voting.

It all started with a duck...

Which was the idea to launch a campaign based on drawing attention to the Elections and the SU, whilst proving the elections could be fun! We hope that this was successful for all those who took part, all through the idea of ‘I give a duck’. This involved various fun activities, such as ‘Hook an SU duck’ which was hugely popular with prizes being won for each duck hooked. We also gave out little SU branded ducks across campus, an absolute hit with students! We got many recommendations for people looking to run in the Elections, and we managed to attract the interest of many more eyes.

Next up was the nominations period, the time in which our candidates would nominate themselves for roles in the election. When word got around about the duck campaign, the team went absolutely quackers and followed it up with many events for students at this time, most of which were informational events in Northop, St. Asaph, Regent Street, and the Wrexham University Main Reception. We tried to get around lectures and talk directly to students through these, and we also led a lighthearted social media campaign around our ‘I give a duck’ theme. The campaign was a huge success, with 9 part time and 4 full time candidates nominated for various roles!

After this began the voting period in which we held polling booths with.. you guessed.. a sizeable population of free ducks to give away! We also had very engaged candidates running for positions, doing a fantastic job of going out there and winning the votes themselves. The candidates often posted on social media, took to the campuses to promote themselves, and got in front of students at lectures and events.

Overall in the Elections, we received 613 votes with a 6.5% turnout. This is our highest vote tally in history and percentage wise the best in 4 years. A huge well done and thank you to all the students who engaged.

And with that, the 2025 Wrexham Students’ Union Elections came to an end!

Running this election was a very fun experience, and we hope we gave you all a laugh too. We wanted to prove the SU Elections could be fun for all those involved. If you ask anyone who took part in or voted, I am sure they would tell you what an experience it was, including these lucky two prize winners!

All the best,

Ben
