What to expect from your next Vice President!

Lauren manifesto

Now that Elections season is over, I've finally come to terms with the overwhelming feeling of gratitude to have been voted in as your next WGSU VP for 2021/22.

The Elections this year were like no other. With all campaigning being online, candidates were forced to think outside the box. Voting was also extended by 4 days, meaning that the total campaign period was 12 days! Everybody who ran for a position worked hard, and as a result, there were more votes cast in total (4129) than there were in last year's Elections (2627). Wow!

What happens now?

Through receiving 213 votes in total, I was elected as your next Vice President of the Students' Union here at Glyndwr. I will begin my role on the 1st of July, and it is then that I will be able to start putting plans into place to deliver on my manifesto points. Switching offices will be a strange one - I'm so used to my office space being on Reception or from my desk at home - so the Sabbs Office will be an exciting change of scenery!

What to expect from me as VP?

I will be a Vice President that advocates for progressive values. My main focus will centre on:

  • Reducing social isolation through MateSpace Glyndwr, an online platform for students to meet one another
  • The Weekly Catch-Up - making myself more accessible to you by giving you the opportunity to come to me directly with any queries or issues you may be having. It will also be an opportunity for me to fill you in on what I'm doing for the Union to keep you in the loop
  • Pushing for a greener Glyndwr - working with the Sustainability Officer and Green Glyndwr group to build on the positive progress that's being made to make the University more sustainable.
  • Mental health - my Mental Health Matters campaign will build on the success of previous sabbatical officers' campaigns, such as Kieran's No Joke campaign and Ebony's ongoing Kindness Is Key campaign.
  • Inclusion - a campaign called Inclusion for All will run with the purpose of making sure that no student group feels left behind. Working closely with part-time officers will be a huge part of this, and thanks to Ebony, there are now more positions on Student Council to represent each student group at the University. With such a wide-ranging demographic, representation for these groups is essential to ensuring that every student has equal opportunity to achieve success in their studies.

What's in store for the next few months?

In the meantime, I will resume my role as Digital Marketing Assistant and Receptionist within the Union, where I already work closely with your current officers, Ebony and Chloe.

Be sure to follow my social media pages from campaigning, which will be updated regularly when I officially begin my role as Vice President:

I can't wait to get started, and I hope that my love of the University and Students' Union reflects on the hard work I'll carry out during my time as one of your sabbatical officers!

In other news, as one season ends, another begins! It's now Awards season at WGSU, and nominations are open until next Thursday (the 8th of April). You can nominate someone for an award here.
