Student role: Course Reps

What is the role?

Course reps are current student volunteers who gather feedback from students on their course and work with their programme team to improve the student experience. They are active campaigning members of the Students’ Union who work towards improving the student experience. By gathering feedback, the course reps work to resolve local departmental issues such as academic standards or the operational facilities available to students. Additionally, they will inform the departments about what works well, what the students on their course have enjoyed and what should be built upon in the future.

What is expected within the role?

Expectations are for the course rep to engage with the Unitu feedback platform on a regular basis. Course reps will need to complete in-person training and familiarise themselves with the Course Rep Handbook, which has all the information they will need. In addition, they will need to undertake training via Unitu, which has a step-by-step module that must be completed. Course reps must ensure they gather feedback at appropriate times of the year, ready to bring to the Student Voice Forum (SVF).

The Student Administration Team will invite course reps to the Student Voice Forums and Programme Leaders will provide you with all the information that you need about these forums. It is essential that the dates are noted, confirmed, and added to the course rep's calendar.

What are the benefits?

A course rep will be offered the opportunity to:

  • Take part in a free extra 20-credit module in Advocacy that will appear on your degree transcript
  • Gain transferable skills to strengthen a CV
  • Gain experience in working in partnership with staff and students in the education sector
  • Opportunities to engage with like-minded people within the University
  • Voluntary role

What training will be provided in this role?

Face-to-face training is offered to all course reps at the beginning of their term in the role. Course reps can also complete their training via an online training portal. Continuous training opportunities are offered throughout the entire year to help keep your knowledge refreshed.
