What is the role?

 

The role of Students’ Union President is the face of the Union and the lead advocate for our students here at Wrexham. The President is voted into office based on a set of manifesto objectives which they set out to achieve during their time in office. These pledges typically aim to make positive changes to students’ university experiences; either through new things they would like to see implemented into University policies/procedures or improvements to existing issues. As President, they are also the Chair of the Board of Trustees (as the Union is a registered charity) and a member of the University’s Board of Governors and Senior Leadership Team. 

 

What is expected within the role?

 

The President will sit on numerous University Boards/Committees to ensure that the student experience is always considered when making decisions. These include but are not limited to: The Board of Governors; Academic Board; Learning, Teaching & Quality Committee; Mental Health & Wellbeing Working Group; Recruitment & Retention, NSS Working Group etc. 

The President also sits on in-house committees within the Students’ Union including the Board of Trustee meetings and Student Council meetings. 

 

As the face of the Union, it is expected that you will speak to students and be the ‘ears to the ground’ to feed back into the strategic and operational groups within the SU & University, as well as being the lead delegate for the Union when attending the NUS conferences. In order to do this, they may be required to attend both daytime and evening events – especially during Welcome Week and University Open Days!

What training will be provided within this role?

 

During the first week(s) in the role, there will be an induction process to support you in understanding and fulfilling your duties. This will include meeting the team, being introduced to members of the Senior Leadership Team within the University and referring to the handover provided by the outgoing President when needed. Every day will be a school day while being in the role, and there are no stupid questions! 

 

Throughout the year there will also be numerous external training opportunities such as Lead and Change and NUS conferences. These will give you the chance to meet fellow sabbatical officers and find out what they’re doing in their Unions, which could inspire valuable insight by adapting your thinking to increase your chances of success!
