Umii is the new way to utilise social media as a student. It is designed exclusively for students, offering a unique way for you to meet your peers at Glyndwr.
Glyndwr will be the first university in Wales to partner with the exciting app, designed specifically to connect students and prevent social isolation. During the last 12 months, making friends at university has been very limiting due to the restrictions of Covid. However, Umii bridges the gap between staying at home and meeting new people by introducing a platform for like-minded students to find one another.
Even when times were normal, many people would be unlikely to approach someone and introduce themselves, so the app allows students that are low on confidence to overcome this.
Not everyone clicks with their flatmates, especially in the first year of studying. If you opted to live in student accommodation as a fresher, who you end up living with tends to be completely random.
In some cases that's not so bad if you're on a big course and have lots in common with your coursemates, but this isn't always the case, either. Sure, joining a society or sports team is always an option, but what if this is too daunting, or there simply isn't a society or team that really interests you?
Students need another option, and Umii really helps to fill the unhealthy void of social isolation that so many of us experience.
Around half the national student population admit to experiencing loneliness during their studies, and with such a diverse demographic of students at Glyndwr, being able to see another student's interests to see if they match yours could act as a catalyst to lasting friendships.
Umii allows users a selection of personalisation options for their profiles. Users are able to:
Users of Umii can choose to connect with other students from Glyndwr, see their profiles and send them a message. It is completely safe, with users having to undergo a verification process using their University email address in order to begin messaging other users.
The app also has a Mental Health Support section, offering the link to the online form for Glyndwr counselling and social prescribing alongside details for external support resources such as Samaritans, CALM and Papyrus.
