I can’t promise you I know everything about being a student - nobody does!
I am a postgraduate student on games development, I have fully enjoyed my time studying at Wrexham University as both undergraduate and postgraduate, I am from a village near Wrexham. I also had my first ever part-time job here as a student ambassador. I have cerebral palsy through speech and movement. I use a talking communication aid called Tobii Dynavox, and I move around in a wheelchair and a powered wheelchair. I am running to be vice president because I want to be a role model for students with disabilities or from a disadvantaged background. Everyone has a right to earn a degree, but it takes dedication and self-motivation. Especially when you have a disability or are from a disadvantaged background, it will take extra dedication and self-motivation, but you got this.
During my time on game development, I learnt how important time is. There were hour requirement modules, so I needed to plan effectively. It is also very important that you have a finished product when you finish the module, and you need to have everybody on your team pulling in the right direction.
During this year, I have been your Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer at the students’ union and it was a very good learning curve. I believe you can’t do things you want to do without getting other people involved, I learnt how student union plays a critical role in the university lifestyle.
My aims if I get elected are to:
Make the university more inclusive and welcoming to all! I will do my best to support the new Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer in carrying out their duties, as do all other part-time officers. Every course must attempt to make reasonable efforts to make their activities accessible to all their students.
Assist societies and sports in raising awareness and funds for the students’ union or local charities! They would have a chance to hold events related to their interests. By doing self-fundraising for the students’ union, students will feel good about themselves helping the union.
Keep popular events such as singer-themed nights such as Harry Styles and Taylor Swift, and I will also continue putting on or supporting events for alumni students!
I am a workaholic and brave individual who doesn’t rest until you are satisfied with your university experience. At the end of day, you as students are one of the main reasons that the university and students’ union exist. When I started here 5 years ago, I didn’t have someone to look up to in a similar position, such as a wheelchair user. I want to be the student who every prospective and current student has some inspiration, whether it was my blogs, my games, or my time in the union.
Thank you very much for reading my manifesto and considering me to be your vice president. If you have any questions, feel free to email me on s19005366@mail.glyndwr.ac.uk
